Security money seized; number to be re-auctioned

A man from Hisar made an eye-popping bid for a fancy vehicle number plate HR88B8888. That may have created a national record with the final bid of Rs.1.17 crore. But, the bidder from Hisar in Haryana has failed to pay the full amount on time. That means the auction is now null and void and he’s lost his Rs.11,000 security deposit.

It’s raised the question of whether the man in question had the financial muscle to back his bid or was simply in the auction for brag rights. It’s also why the Haryana Transport Department has ordered a probe. Minister Anil Vij has said the inquiry will find out whether the bidder had the financial capacity to make such a large bid. The aim of the probe is to stop fake bidders from inflating prices and damaging the credibility of government auctions.

The auction was held online by the transport department through the Ministry of Road Transport. The base price was Rs. 50,000, and 45 bidders took part in the auction.

Officials said the number cannot be given to the second-highest bidder and is now being auctioned again.

According to the bidder, the reason he failed to deposit the amount on Saturday night was due to a technical glitch. He also added that his family is against spending a hefty amount on a number plate.
