What is Computer Networking?

by Team Goseeko

Computer networking is a collection of devices that are link together. meanwhile, A computer, printer, or any other device capable of sending or receiving data can be used as a node. Therefore, Communication channels are the links that connect the nodes.

Distributed processing is use in a computer network, when tasks are spread among numerous machines. Instead of one computer doing the complete task, each computer handles a piece of it.

Connected computing devices (such as laptops, desktops, servers, smartphones, and tablets) and an ever-growing array of Internet of Things (IoT) devices (such as cameras, doorbells, refrigerators, audio/visual systems, and various sensors) that communicate with one another are referred to as computer networking.

Application of the network

The following are some examples of network applications in various fields.

  1. Financial services
  2. Marketing and sales
  3. Manufacturing
  4. Information services
  5. Cellular telephone
  6. Cable television
  7. EDI
  8. E-mail etc
  9. Teleconferencing
  10. CAD, CAM etc.

Objectives

The following are the network’s key objectives.

  • Resource sharing
  • Cost reduction
  • High reliability
  • Improve performance
  • Communication medium

Categories

Based on their complexity, computer networks are divide in four categories:

  1. PAN : A personal area network (PAN) is a computer network that is formed around an individual. In addition, a computer, a cell phone, or a personal digital assistant are the most common components. subsequently, PAN can use to link these personal devices to a digital network and the internet by establishing contact between them.
  1. LAN : A Local Area Network (LAN) is a set of computers and peripheral devices link in a small area, such as a classroom, laboratory, home, or office building. It’s a popular network for sharing resources such as files, printers, games, and other software. Connecting computers and a printer in someone’s home or office is the most basic form of LAN network.
  1. MAN : firstly, A Metropolitan Area Network, or MAN, is a computer network that spans a city, a college campus, or a small area. Secondly, This network is far larger than a LAN, which is usually restrict to a single building or location. subsequently, This form of network can cover a range of distances from a few miles to tens of miles, depending on the configuration.
  1. WAN : Another significant computer network that spans a vast geographical area is the WAN (Wide Area Network). On the other hand, A WAN network system may be a LAN link that uses telephone lines and radio waves to connect to other LANs. It is usually restrict to a single company or organisation.
