What is Electrical Engineering?

Electrical Engineering (EE) curriculum covers a wide variety of exercises – laboratory training, coaching, project work, and personal research. On average, graduation takes four and a half years to complete.

As mentioned above, EE is a four year course, And for better learning and assessment it is divided into eight semesters. 

Division of the Semesters

First semester in electrical engineering comprises specific subjects namely mathematics, english, physics, basic engineering concepts, chemistry and engineering graphics.

Second semesters may include subjects such as materials science, mathematics, principles of environmental science, biology for engineers, engineering mechanics, basic engineering and engineering graphics.

Generally in the third semester students study fluid machine & mechanics, mathematics, electrical circuit analysis, electrical machines, electronic devices and electromagnetic theory.

The fourth semester includes subjects such as, electrical machines, computer skills, transmission and distribution systems,  numerical methods, control systems, and electronic circuits.

During fifth semester, students may study the following subjects namely electronic and electrical instrumentation & measurements, engineering economics & management, digital signal processing, linear integrated circuits, design of electrical devices and digital systems.

The sixth semester may include subjects such as microprocessors,  power electronics and gear change, microcontrollers and protection & analysis of the power system.

The seventh semester may include subjects such as SSD and power management, operation and management of power systems, & electives.

In the  eighth semester students may study subjects  such as embedded systems, digital control systems,  power management & instrumentation and optical communications.

To get admission in the electrical engineering course, students need to qualify for the entrance exam. But some colleges enroll students just based on the 10th and 12th scoreboard.

There is no set process to get admission to an EE course. Each university and college have a different admission process. Every year, an entrance exam is conducted on the national and international levels.

Specialization In Electrical Engineering

There are many areas where students can pursue a specialization as per their interests. Some common areas are electrical installations (eg. lighting and heating systems), power generation & transmission, electrostatics (types of electricity bills). Others include magnetostatics, signal processing, control (security measures for electrical installations), computer software and hardware.
