Electric    charge    is    a    scalar    quantity.    The    SI    unit    of    charge    is    coulomb    (C).    Every    neutral    object    contains    an    equal    number    of    electrons    and    protons.    When    the    number    of    electrons    and    protons    is    not    equal,    the    object    possesses    a    net    negative    or    positive    charge.    •    Like    mass,    electric    charge    is    additive    in    nature.    The    total    electric    charge    on    a    body    is    equal    to    the    algebraic    sum    of    all    the    electric    charges    that    are    distributed    on    the    different    parts    of    the    body.

The    electromotive    force    of    a    cell    may    be    defined    as    the    maximum    potential    difference    between    the    electrodes    of    the    cell    when    no    current    is    drawn    from    the    cell    or    when    the    cell    is    in    the    open    circuit.    The    SI    unit    of    emf    of    a    cell    is    volt    (V)    or    Joule    per    coulomb    (JC–1).    It    is    a    scalar    quantity.

The    branch    of    physics    that    deals    with    the    magnetism    due    to    electric    current    is    called    electromagnetism.    The    magnetic    field    in    a    region    can    be    represented    by    magnetic    lines    of    force.    A    magnetic    field    is    the    space    around    a    current-carrying    conductor    in    which    its    influence    can    be    experienced.    It    must    be    kept    mind    that    a    moving    charge    is    always    a    source    of    magnetic    field.    The    magnetic    field    is    represented    by    B → ,    which    is    called    magnetic    field    density    or    magnetic    induction    or    simply    magnetic    field.

The    magnetic    flux    (fB)    through    any    surface    kept    in    a    magnetic    field    → () B    is    measured    by    the    total    number    of    magnetic    lines    of    force    crossing    the    surface.

Maxwell    introduced    the    concept    of    displacement    current    in    1865.    The    phenomenon    of    electricity    and    magnetism    were    brought    together    into    a    coherent    and    unified    theory.    •    Maxwell    proved    that    not    only    a    current    flowing    through    a    conductor    but    a    time    varying    electric    field    in    vacuum    or    free    space    also    produces    a    magnetic    field.    Thus,    a    changing    electric    field    gives    rise    to    current    that    flows    through    a    region    so    long    as    the    electric    field    is    changing    there.

•    The    branch    of    Physics    which    deals    with    the    study    of    nature,    production    and    propagation    of    light    is    called    optics.    •    The    branch    of    Physics    that    deals    with    the    measurement    of    light    energy    is    called    photometry.    This    energy    is    called    radiant energy.    •    The    luminous    flux    of    a    source    of    light    may    be    defined    as    the    luminous    or    visible    energy    emitted    per    second    from    the    source.    It    is    denoted    by    f.    It    is    measured    in    Lumen.

A    photon    is    a    packet    of    energy.    The    energy    possessed    by    a    photon    is    given    by, E = hn        where    h    is    Planck’s    constant    and    n    is    frequency    of    radiation.     h    =    6.626    ×    10–34    Js        If    l    is    the    wavelength    of    photon,    then c = nl,    where    c    =    3    ×    108    ms–1 \ E = hn = c h λ

According    to    Thomson‘s    model,    every    atom    consists    of    a    positively    charged    sphere    of    radius    of    the    order    of    10–10    m,    where    entire    mass    and    positive    charge    of    the    atom    are    uniformly    distributed.    Inside    the    sphere,    the    electrons    are    embedded    like    seeds    in    a    watermelon.    •    The    number    of    electrons    is    such    that    their    total    negative    charge    is    equal    to    the    positive    charge    of    the    atom.    Therefore,    the    atom    is    electrically    neutral.    •    Thomson‘s    model    of    atom    could    not    explain    large    angle    scattering    of    a-particles    from    thin    metal    foils,    as    was    observed    by    Rutherford.

A    solid    is    a    form    of    matter    that    is    characterized    by    a    definite    shape    and    definite    volume.    On    the    basis    of    their    characteristic    properties,    the    solids    have    been    classified    into    two    categories: (i)    crystalline    solids (ii)    amorphous    solids    •    The    crystalline    solids    have    a    definite    external    geometrical    shape.    The    constituent    ions    or    atoms    or    molecules    are    arranged    in    a    definite    geometrical    pattern.    Moreover,    all    the    bonds    in    ions    or    atoms    or    molecules    are    equally    strong.  Examples    of    crystalline    solids    are:        quartz,    sugar,    rock    salt,    diamond,    etc
