The basic principle of working is\u00a0 based on production of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goseeko.com\/blog\/what-is-an-induction-motor\/\">induced emf<\/a>.\u00a0 The DC Motors can be classified into following categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"364\" height=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/TfOVsfdHHyrEYIXnyXNG5OtuHZuzBW6JmB-1rjuamUzjnD0hygLD4xvIt89CTgxvgeqGkDLPiB6ZWjsYwIoWWQ56Q6aoJmyLy-5nFoC04fOVcSUhxBjCiRcrbKoIcneO-_PGNGNR\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Separately Excited DC Motor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The supply to the armature and field windings in separately excited DC Motors is provided separately. The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Field_coil#:~:text=A%20field%20coil%20is%20an,through%20which%20a%20current%20flows.\">field windings<\/a> are separately excited through a DC supply source. Therefore, the armature current will not flow through the armature windings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"245\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/sec7QKyhE0uC4hino_7ShZhbWyVfMjuATa09JbK_MNMaDLRFnD_9YMmw7NzJ73RlhC8bNq5_dAyHVvtClNcGzQGPBypttBL8CsD903JxgFBRUgwo5NAtkRi0_fxWaAyDEqrwJUJX\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the torque current equation of DC Motor we have<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>T<sub>g<\/sub> = K<sub>a<\/sub> \u03c6 I<sub>a<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the above relation we can conclude that the torque is not dependent upon the armature current and can be varied only by varying the field flux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Permanent Magnet DC Motor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These types of motors have armature windings as the basic DC motor but will necessarily not have any field windings. The field flux in such motors is produced by the radially magnetized permanent magnet which is mounted on the periphery of the stator core. The relation between the torque and current for permanent magnet DC Motor is as below<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>T<sub>g<\/sub> = K<sub>a1<\/sub> I<sub>a<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the above relation we can conclude that the armature supply can be controlled through the torque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Self Excited DC Motor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In this type of motors the field windings are connected such that they can be in parallel, series or partially parallel or series. The types of self excited DC Motor are&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1)<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 <strong>Shunt motor \u2013 <\/strong>In the illustration shown below the field winding is connected in parallel with the armature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"297\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/146aUbl78m1k2vWCFVNfDDC36aBtol1ewmPPWP9YqeWYqm2LTB374MjYITTMe1NllaJlGGXoo9mQyru8d-dlLNFhlUJkWScNYldWXX4HlEnZdfOF3pRgYC3ghS4X7MbJW3kFh-bZ\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The input current I = I<sub>a<\/sub> + I<sub>sh<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For field winding, V = I<sub>sh<\/sub>R<sub>sh<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For armature, V = E<sub>b<\/sub> + I<sub>a<\/sub>R<sub>a<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I<sub>a<\/sub> = armature current<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I<sub>sh<\/sub> = shunt field current<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>V = input voltage<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I = Input current<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Power Input = Mechanical power + losses in armature + losses in field<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VI = P<sub>mech<\/sub> +&nbsp; I<sub>a<\/sub><sup>2<\/sup>R<sub>a<\/sub> + I<sub>sh<\/sub><sup>2<\/sup>R<sub>sh<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>P<sub>mech<\/sub> = VI \u2013 VI<sub>sh<\/sub> &#8211; = I<sub>a<\/sub><sup>2<\/sup>R<sub>a<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sub>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/sub><sub> <\/sub>= V(I \u2013 I<sub>sh<\/sub>) \u2013 I<sub>a<\/sub><sup>2<\/sup>R<sub>a<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; = VI<sub>a<\/sub> &#8211; = I<sub>a<\/sub><sup>2<\/sup>R<sub>sh<\/sub> = (V \u2013 I<sub>a<\/sub>R<sub>a<\/sub>)I<sub>a<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>P<sub>mech<\/sub> = E<sub>a<\/sub>I<sub>a<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2)<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 <strong>Series motor \u2013 <\/strong>In this, the field winding is connected in series with the armature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"273\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/QXD8vlvSh375gawj1TPxemEVHXssdd1C91uoPIdG4qX_s4zq16mYIgwu-5R4NFAYZDrphrvisgsYf4s4en5lN764wGj-acXF2wqCOQEYmF6I0I3MPZ5rwMtZLolIebxR6lnbHmDw\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I = I<sub>a<\/sub> = I<sub>se<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>V = E<sub>a<\/sub> + I(R<sub>a<\/sub> + R<sub>se<\/sub>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then from above equation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VI = E<sub>a<\/sub>I + I<sup>2<\/sup>(R<sub>a<\/sub> + R<sub>se<\/sub>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VI = P<sub>mech<\/sub> + I<sup>2<\/sup> R<sub>a<\/sub> + I<sup>2<\/sup>R<sub>se<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>P<sub>mech<\/sub> = E<sub>a<\/sub> I<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3)<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 <strong>Compound Motor \u2013 <\/strong>It is a type of dc motor which has both shunt and series field windings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"545\" height=\"284\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/aqRXzu53n-ZrFRmws31RfSPSG_BHlVB9sRs6X3mlQ7Q7_agOXxyZxs8ObIK2-3XXoDdRDpho7VkM38TsyA7MfYuWAjaG9GcJIC9OFP2hMeR4q6bVCCILXdI5qeh8LCT_R47xPH0z\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>V = E<sub>a<\/sub> \u00b1 I<sub>a<\/sub> (R<sub>a<\/sub> + R<sub>se<\/sub>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I<sub>L<\/sub> = I<sub>a<\/sub> \u00b1 I<sub>F<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are basically of 2 types- long shunt and short shunt.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Short Shunt DC Motor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When the armature winding and shunt field windings are only parallel to each other and to the series field winding.
