{"id":7140,"date":"2022-04-15T17:47:46","date_gmt":"2022-04-15T12:17:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.goseeko.com\/blog\/?p=7140"},"modified":"2025-12-27T11:27:01","modified_gmt":"2025-12-27T05:57:01","slug":"what-is-correlation-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.goseeko.com\/blog\/what-is-correlation-2\/","title":{"rendered":"What is correlation?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overview:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When the changes in one variable are associated or followed by change in the other, therefore we say that there is a correlation between the two.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, such types of data connecting two variables is called a bivariate population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If an increase or decrease in the values of one variable corresponds to an increase or decrease in the other.In other words, if one value increases the other also increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, the corr. is said to be positive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other case, If the increase (or decrease) in one corresponds to the decrease (or increase) in the other, then it is said to be negative.&nbsp;Similarly, If there is no relationship indicated between the variables, they are said to be independent or uncorrelated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When two variables are related in such a way that change in the value of one variable affects the value of the other variable, these two variables are said to be correlated and there is corr. between two variables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Example- Height and weight of the people in a group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/c\/correlation.asp#:~:text=Correlation%20is%20a%20statistical%20term,they%20have%20a%20negative%20correlation.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">correlation<\/a> is said to be perfect if two variables vary in such a way that their ratio is always constant. or in other words, if one variable is increasing or decreasing constantly then these two variables will be in perfect correlation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scatter diagram:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/nNzrPWR8EAUv9dqgp2CKj5jX0WA9YZmk6dF28djXcb3u0J9CAGlMsMNE4YcTX0UrLqNrwGVQKLcBdzN9WDzv9-Dqt9cjaah-0-gn_f8P0a8BuSHsovKuFyjpt6DISjTV_3Xeact8\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:381px;height:186px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/pW4bdG5SATlyES-ta7glwRlzDKdEZUjmXSD9Mh1zQ0V6ywfiDkXSJH7hLS9xAGlQ2MP7vFHDoUed3fe1xqKYUya7IfQ8PQoaAYy6q9NdocSun1SG3AfUrtwkNuTvnSpeyxv6Vf13\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:347px;height:230px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here note that in order to obtain a measure of relationship between the two variables, we plot their corresponding values on the graph, taking one of the variables along the x-axis and the other along the y-axis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here note that Corr. measures the nature and strength of relationship between two variables. it lies between +1 to -1. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, a corr. of +1 indicates a perfect positive corr. between two variables. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that, A zero corr. indicates that there is no relationship between the variables. A corr.  of -1 indicates a perfect negative.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Definition<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCorr. analysis deals with the association between two or more variables.\u201d  In other words, \u201cCorr. is an analysis of the co-variation between two variables.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Methods of computing coefficient of corr<\/strong>.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/fktrSI_EVwNVhJLQ6K_RBHiW4oiJVNG1XqI_M2aihI58q_BV2tUW6Bs1XZShXPAS74nUA1bvtMYmH6mCNhdLSkPN20FShbLYnCAmnDIEyMGMKotCSJ40Y-Pq-Y2yu-tl5NhLZYap\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:354px;height:197px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1.<\/strong> <strong>Scatter diagram method<\/strong>&#8211;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the simplest method to study corr. between two variables. therefore, The correlations of two variables are plotted in the graph in the form of dots thereby obtaining as many points as the number of observations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, the degree of corr. is ascertained by looking at the scattered points over the charts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that, the more the points plotted are scattered over the chart, the lesser is the degree of corr. between the variables. Similarly, the more the points plotted are closer to the line, the higher is the degree of corr. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here note that the degree of corr. is denoted by \u201cr\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perfect positive corr. (r= 0) \u2013 all the points are scatter over the graph and do not show any pattern<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/fl3nd5PUarx3ifQnbj-OIZ-uQhjE5TrKfAziw43SL6F1gutPRpL4r18eChuWOM662u9Nz375Q1UPWc2YiVkwEIJEDqR9OOdcq6d7vE02gOxoH5fOFaA2IIds-DxR8hNtkAsnmUdd\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, we widely use the Karl Pearson\u2019s Coefficient of Corr. to calculate the degree and direction of the relationship between linear related variables.  The coefficient of corr. is denoted by \u201cr\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/c\/correlationcoefficient.asp#:~:text=The%20correlation%20coefficient%20is%20a,error%20in%20the%20correlation%20measurement.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Coefficient of Corr<\/a><\/strong>.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Karl Pearson\u2019s coefficient of corr<\/strong>.<strong>&#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/vjT1J8v8X7amy2PNZgCvlVMrEIoaXqmmuG4qrxIcL6wJb_7ZVs3BBireWcWndQSNDHxuvV2iJNGu8oqXr7loxoAFFi77ut9r7mAyJ5vUlpYlFh70Tx3xAIjiFL2juPGl0ho-3MDZ\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:443px;height:122px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here note that-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Corr. coefficient always lies between -1 and +1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Corr. coefficient is independent of change of origin and scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3.
