{"id":6578,"date":"2021-10-12T13:28:05","date_gmt":"2021-10-12T07:58:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.goseeko.com\/blog\/?p=5995"},"modified":"2025-11-25T12:23:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T06:53:12","slug":"what-is-white-wash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.goseeko.com\/blog\/what-is-white-wash\/","title":{"rendered":"What is White wash?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>White wash:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is a process of giving wash covering to the plastered or pointed surface.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In case of white washing a wash of slaked lime mixed with water is applied.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sometimes other ingredients like gum, rice water, common salt etc are added to improve the properties of the lime.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Operations included in White wash:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>White washing includes following operations:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Preparation of white wash\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preparation of surface for white wash<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Application of white wash<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1.Preparation of white wash :<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The material required for white washing is fat lime or shell lime unslacked lime lumps are mixed with water and the mixture is thoroughly stirred with the help of bamboo.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The lime is allowed to get fully slaked for about 24 hrs.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After 24 hrs, it is stirred up with a pole and additional water is added until it attains the consistency of thin cream.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This mixture is then screened through a clean cloth.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clean gum is dissolved in hot water at rate of 4 kg\/m of thin cream.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The dissolved gum is added to the slaked lime solution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sometimes alum, common salt or rice water are used in place of gum. To prevent the glare effect due to white wash sometimes copper sulphate at the rate of 4 kg\/m of thin cream is added.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gum or rice water are used to improve adhesive properties of white wash.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.Preparation of surface :<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Before applying it, the surface to be white washed should be made thoroughly day.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the surface is new, it should be thoroughly cleaned, brushed and made free from mortar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>dropping or any other loose materials.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the surface is very smooth, it will not stick to it and therefore, the surface should be rubbed with sand paper to ensure proper adhesion of white wash.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In case of white washing the old surface again, all loose materials and scales should be scrapped off.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The old loose white wash is removed by rubbing with sand paper.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All holes in the wall, irregularities of surface should be filled with lime putty well in advance, so that the surface is dry before white washing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If there are oil or grease spot on the surface, they should be rubbed with sand paper and should be given a coat of mixture of rice water and sand, so that the it can stick to the surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the surface is discoloured because of smoke, the surface should be washed with wood ash and water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.Application of white wash:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After preparing the surface it is applied in one coat, two coat or three coat.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In case of new surfaces three coats of it are required and for old surfaces one or two coats of it are sufficient.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The white washing is done with the help of a jute brush.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For each coat one stroke is given from top to bottom and the other from bottom to top over the 1st stroke and one stroke from <a href=\"https:\/\/intraweb.esquel.org.ec\/\" style=\"color: black\">https:\/\/intraweb.esquel.org.ec\/<\/a> the right and other from left over the first stroke.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each successive stroke of brush should slightly overlap the preceding stroke.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If only one or two strokes of it are to be applied the last coat should be applied with horizontal strokes of the brush.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each coat should be allowed to dry before applying the next coat.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The finished dry surface of it should be smooth and even and it should not come off readily on fingers when rubbed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Interested in learning about similar topics?
