In other words, when we have a mathematical function having more than one variables, we use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toppr.com\/guides\/fundamentals-of-business-mathematics-and-statistics\/calculus\/partial-differentiation\/#:~:text=Partial%20differentiation%20is%20used%20to%20differentiate%20mathematical%20functions,partial%20differentiation%20is%20more%20general%20than%20ordinary%20differentiation.\">partial differentiation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Symbolically and mathematically the relationship is defined as below<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>z is called a function of two variables x and y if z has one definite value for every pair of values of x and y.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>it is written as<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>z = f (x, y)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The variable x and y are called independent variables while z is called the dependent variable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note- the function z = f (x, y) represents a surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Partial derivatives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First order <a href=\"https:\/\/tutorial.math.lamar.edu\/Classes\/CalcIII\/PartialDerivatives.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">partial differentiation<\/a>&#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let f(x , y) be a function of two variables. Then the <a href=\"https:\/\/tutorial.math.lamar.edu\/Classes\/CalcIII\/PartialDerivatives.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">partial derivative<\/a> of this function with respect to x can be written as <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"23\" height=\"35\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/0UPnZbBD8ggW5imueay4y1NcBqarMGHyoo3bHrIdKe6H1YoyMEOlRhmRKSxxlrC6shMvTs-Z5WvHSpr8ZUfiaf5xW2EN2FkM72Ikgl6GwmFozKwOu8tVS7s-uo2zuWBrqZbdCMP8=s0\"> and defined as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/7_vTtKRBqknsZFwLgghF21r1nHd4YMpNsKTzWrqNED2cmJGd8fAA6RZ93fvYDhuMWYqKSXnL8_qspNp4FxZ43I5HdfNZmv1gPyqFeB03Ossg_9oo1Sn-uwruCm9WljDhIWeECzlJ=s0\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now the partial derivative of f with respect to f can be written as <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/u_w9yVZlhychMXOQmwUsvAq13RmOGE48iS0CDAhCIM9gByaDQGmjd3bkOBKHmT5p8oZWfn1LqpSebXWH3atk3ERcFKRx2UjuSGPChg-to71ivbyCGqd_ytYokOQ2ZsXDH74DyzKk=s0\" width=\"23\" height=\"36\"> and defined as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/WeQa-lk8aMkSWJzNS88C67hqUn4JE0vJq5j8ybZNL1YHXxPS4tSpmIKPTY6r5UbgpFUgSlWrob5V46BQ7veD_UxrX_LMAVMk1qYvqJ6Fb1yqTs9rVTw5tDW2XyZWLZ2L1mkCbkvH=s0\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: a. while calculating partial derivatives treat all independent variables, other than the variable with respect to which we are differentiating , as constant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>b. we apply all differentiation rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Higher order partial differentiation-<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let f(x , y) be a function of two variables.
