He proposed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.encyclopedia.com\/science-and-technology\/astronomy-and-space-exploration\/astronomy-general\/electromagnetic-spectrum\">electromagnetic radiation<\/a> interacts with matter in the following three steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stimulated Absorption<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spontaneous Emission<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stimulated Emission<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Stimulated Absorption&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Firstly assume E<sub>1 <\/sub>and E<sub>2<\/sub> be the energies of the ground and excited states of an atom.  Suppose if a photon of energy h\u03bd= E<sub>1<\/sub>\u2212 E<sub>2<\/sub> interacts with an atom present in the ground state, the atom gets excitation from ground state E<sub>1<\/sub> to excited state E<sub>2<\/sub>. Thus, this process is called stimulated absorption. Firstly Suppose, a photon of energy h\u03bd= E<sub>1<\/sub>\u2212 E<sub>2<\/sub> interacts with an atom present in the ground state.  Then the atom gets excitation from ground state E<sub>1<\/sub> to excited state E<sub>2<\/sub>. However, The excited atom does not stay longer in the excited state. Thus the excited atom gets de-excitation after its lifetime by emitting a photon of energy h\u03bd= E<sub>1<\/sub>\u2212 E<sub>2<\/sub>. This process called spontaneous emission. Also Spontaneous means by its own. Here excited atom comes to the ground state on its own. So it is named as spontaneous emission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, the spontaneous emission rate depends upon the number of atoms present in the excited state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Spontaneous emission \u221d Rate of availability of atoms in the excited state<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Stimulated Emission<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This phenomenon is responsible for producing laser light. Let E<sub>1<\/sub>and E<sub>2<\/sub> be the energies of the ground and excited states of an atom. Suppose, if a photon of energy h\u03bd= E<sub>1<\/sub>\u2212 E<sub>2<\/sub> interacts with an atom present in the ground state. Hence the atom gets excitation from ground stateE<sub>1<\/sub> to excited state E<sub>2<\/sub>. Let, a photon of energy h\u03bd= E<sub>1<\/sub>\u2212 E<sub>2<\/sub> interacts with the excited atom within their lifetime; the atom gets de-excitation to the ground state by emitting another photon. These photons have the same phase and it follows coherence.
