{"id":4700,"date":"2021-08-03T10:08:08","date_gmt":"2021-08-03T04:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.goseeko.com\/blog\/?p=4700"},"modified":"2026-01-09T15:19:27","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T09:49:27","slug":"what-is-race-around-condition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.goseeko.com\/blog\/what-is-race-around-condition\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Race around Condition?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Race around condition occurs in JK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goseeko.com\/blog\/what-are-flip-flops-in-sequential-circuits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Flip Flop&nbsp;<\/a> when both its inputs J=K=1 and also the clock =1 for a long period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>J-K Flip Flop<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Truth_table\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">truth table<\/a> is shown below with its circuit diagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"376\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/6ryHbW5lTak2QwV7Wi9PHsiUEYxiNo3xLcGAhkRHkOdnl1fGamkTy31t26pnqNawF9Q6AvBgLolDwUed42BurW5yaC7KCAII1oyx-_NqYi-eZTOO4pTQgeAS4kAoFTOpj8UPXlSs\"><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Race Around Condition in JK Flip-flop<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For J-K flip-flop, if J=K=1, and if clk=1 for a long period of time, then output Q will toggle as long as CLK remains high which makes the output unstable or uncertain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is called a race around condition in J-K flip-flop.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We can overcome this problem by making the clock =1 for very less duration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The circuit used to overcome race around conditions is called the Master<strong> Slave JK<\/strong> flip flop.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Master Slave JK flip flop<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Here two JK flip flops are connected in series.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;The first JK flip flop is called the <strong>\u201cmaster\u201d<\/strong> and the other is a <strong>\u201cslave\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;The output from the master is connected to the two inputs of the slave whose output is fed back to inputs of the master.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;The circuit also has an inverter other than the two flip flops.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Clock Pulse and inverter are connected because of which the flip flops get an inverted clock pulse.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;In other words, if CP=0 for a master flip-flop, then CP=1 for a slave flip-flop and vice versa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"430\" height=\"243\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/HtWEULDqSiLzmObF_yd_bdeLMfIaMctu69u4ln1YBnsxPrXUW5Yqs_uP-27fEkhJzGvsauUwMMA6kXejCjDX5MgZsuSylil_ogI3l6YySuPfVvgvQU0UKddZTZpW_GJVm6IZqpk8\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Working of a Master Slave flip flop<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When the clock pulse goes high, the slave is isolated; J and K inputs can affect the state of the system. The slave flip-flop is isolated when the CP goes low.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When the CP goes back to 0, information is transmitted from the master flip-flop to the slave flip-flop and output is obtained.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As the master flip flop is positive triggered it responds first and the slave later (it is negative edge triggered).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The master goes to the K input of the slave when both inputs J=0 and K=1, and also Q\u2019 = 1. In this case the slave copies the master as the clock forces the slave to reset.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The master goes to the J input of the slave when both J=1 and K=0, Q = 1. The clock is set due to the negative transition of the clock.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is a state of toggle when both J=1 and K=1. On the negative transition of clock slave toggles and&nbsp; the master toggles on the positive transition of the clock.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both the flip flops are disabled when both J=0 and K=0 and Q is unchanged.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Interested in learning about similar topics?
