{"id":4471,"date":"2021-08-03T10:08:08","date_gmt":"2021-08-03T04:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.goseeko.com\/blog\/?p=4471"},"modified":"2021-10-30T07:40:34","modified_gmt":"2021-10-30T07:40:34","slug":"what-are-multiplexers-and-de-multiplexers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.goseeko.com\/blog\/what-are-multiplexers-and-de-multiplexers\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Multiplexers and De-multiplexers?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Multiplexers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Multiplexer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Multiplexer<\/a> is a special type of combinational circuit.<\/li><li>&nbsp;It has n-data inputs, one output and m inputs select lines with 2<sup>m<\/sup> = n.<\/li><li>&nbsp;It selects one of the n data inputs and directs it to the output.<\/li><li>The select lines choose one of the inputs.<\/li><li>Depending on the code applied at the inputs, one of the n data sources is selected and transmitted to the single output Y.<\/li><li>The enable input E is responsible for cascading purpose.<\/li><li>&nbsp;It is an active low terminal hence performs the required operation when it is low.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Multiplexers come in multiple variations<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>2 : 1 multiplexer<\/li><li>4 : 1 multiplexer<\/li><li>16 : 1 multiplexer<\/li><li>32 : 1 multiplexer<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Block Diagram of 4:1 Multiplexer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It has 4 input lines and one output line. There are also two select lines. The four input lines are I0, I1, I2 and I3. Also, S0,S1 have two select lines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"306\" height=\"227\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/OEwfYfUtCj020oX3VugyIjrBb_CCGiAHy6L1WfW15qffuzb293E6-AzCrFawas8QZzFjCVhDaA-IljSE1actHl62kn1BOeOLmSHHQsY6U66wLpRzjKx3mNU6_iNhHoUVell28G5h\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Truth Table of 4:1 MUX<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"419\" height=\"206\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/HxeNTQ-jI59rdV_ABbU1lEEloG_8ZvjKTSBcKi3TN337PYZWrB9BA4WsEyR1X3XIcBQusjoBhQ5DXU1kQbDOfijzuzkanmHr7Aicl7vNZmZNHiGAMSkg_zO0JZ_Ueo3fLfsD4sNl\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Boolean expression for output is&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"460\" height=\"36\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/cPviT1A2mZRL9x13H4fycSO5aymBpXtKVicdoBbvmCLUaFlztnCXEq6z8oHuFL8Ap499_whyoFiB7XstEohUI4MjdWYnYJ9kAabgasy-8uhoSDw7cKXy5auwe2krY_0Zb6cXvJ-m\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By using basic logic gates we can implement the above boolean expression as<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"415\" height=\"268\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/jcLAeWSzVgV2cXO7PN7oEEAabNOEmARTRyl0eEgUEkJX8hpuqEOwMwpW4taD_Nkrq2BtP_e_wtQS7QMG_vB5l3I3aA-FldrO1rwZ1ZLTjJU0LPBRjoJi6HQYseX6vH5A-ZU_z90w\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If both the select inputs S0=S1=0 , then the bottom most&nbsp; AND gate is enabled and all other AND gates are disabled. So, the data input I0 is selected and transmitted as output. Hence, we get the output I0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If both the select inputs S0=S1=1,&nbsp; then the top-most AND gate is enabled and all other AND gates are disabled. So, the data input I3is selected and transmitted as output.
