{"id":4386,"date":"2021-08-03T10:14:01","date_gmt":"2021-08-03T04:44:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.goseeko.com\/blog\/?p=4386"},"modified":"2026-01-31T11:54:00","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T06:24:00","slug":"what-is-piezometer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.goseeko.com\/blog\/what-is-piezometer\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Piezometer?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Piezometer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Piezometer is a instrument which measures the pore water pressure or effective stress in a soil medium.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It plays an important role in dam safety instrumentation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One can use it before construction of dam, during construction of dam and after construction of dam.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Piezometers can be installed within structure of dam.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It can also be used at the upstream or downstream of the structure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Purpose of Piezometer:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Purpose of such instrument are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For monitoring dam performance,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rate of construction,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For slope stability assessment and ground improvements.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of Piezometers:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are mainly two types of piezometers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Vibrating wire piezometer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pneumatic piezometer<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1.Vibrating wire piezometer:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One can use such type of piezometers to determine pore water pressure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It consist of porous stone connected to sealed metal chamber with diaphragm adjacent to the stone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One connects the chamber to an electronic readout device.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Modern device readout calibration automatically.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Advantages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following are the various advantages of vibrating wire piezometers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It provides automatic data collection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It also provides remote data collection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also provides good response time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is moderately simple transducer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is simple o monitor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has very short lag time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lastly, it has no freezing problems.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Disadvantages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following are the various disadvantages of vibrating wire piezometers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Firstly, it requires power.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It gives incorrect readings in unsaturated conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Require lighting protection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is expensive transducer and readout.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is sensitive to temperature and barometric pressure changes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lastly, there is risk of zero drift, but some models are available with in-situ calibration check.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.Pneumatic Piezometer:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This type of piezometers consists of a porous filter connected to two tubes having flexible diaphragm in-between.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It holds the diaphragm closed with the help of external water pressure.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The end of one of the tube is attached water pressure.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The end of one of the tubes is attached to a dry air supply and a pressure gauge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One can use it to determine the ground water pressure and pore water pressure in saturated soil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Advantages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following are the various advantages of pneumatic piezometers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Firstly, it is moderately simple transducer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Secondly, Frequency output signal permits transmission over the long distances.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thirdly, it is easily automated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fourthly, moderately expensive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fifthly, it is more reliable and keep fairly long experience record.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sixthly, it makes remote reading possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lastly, One can calibrate it at any time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Disadvantages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following are the various disadvantages of pneumatic piezometers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Firstly, it has moderately complex monitoring and maintenance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Secondly, it is difficult to be automate for long distances.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thirdly, Condensation can cause inaccurate readings if one does not controls it properly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fourthly, it require dry air and readout device.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fifthly, it is sensitive to barometric pressure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lastly, it has moderately expensive readout.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Interested in learning about similar topics?
