{"id":4380,"date":"2021-08-03T10:14:01","date_gmt":"2021-08-03T04:44:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.goseeko.com\/blog\/?p=4380"},"modified":"2021-10-30T07:40:32","modified_gmt":"2021-10-30T07:40:32","slug":"what-is-spillway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.goseeko.com\/blog\/what-is-spillway\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Spillway?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Spillway:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Spillway is the passage provided for disposal of surplus flood water on the downstream side without affecting stability of water.<\/li><li>This is necessary as water will go on rising even above high flood level.<\/li><li>Also it will start flowing from top of the dam which as a result may affect the stability of dam.<\/li><li>Therefore,it is essential to provide spillway to dispose surplus water.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Requirements:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The various essential requirement of spillways are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Firstly, it must have adequate discharge capacity.<\/li><li>Secondly, One should provide some devices with it for energy dissipation.<\/li><li>Thirdly, its discharge should be such that it should not cause flooding on downstream side.<\/li><li>Fourthly, it must be safe.<\/li><li>Fifthly, it\u2019s surface must be erosion resistant.<\/li><li>Lastly, it should be located such that it should not erode downstream toe of dam.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Factors Affecting its capacity:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The various factors which affect its capacity are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Inflow<\/li><li>Capacity of outlet.<\/li><li>Possible Damage<\/li><li>Available shortage Capacity.<\/li><li>Gates of Spillway.<\/li><li>Site condition.<\/li><li>Type of dam and its purpose.<\/li><li>Height of the crest of spillway.<\/li><li>Geological condition.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Component Parts of Spillway:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The component parts are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Body,Weir or Spillway<\/li><li>Approach Channel<\/li><li>Energy Dissipators<\/li><li>Tail Channel<\/li><li>Guide wall<\/li><li>Discharge Channel<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>1.Body,Weir or Spillway:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It may be Ogee shaped, U shaped, semicircular or circular.<\/li><li>These are sometimes provided with gates to control flow of water.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>2.Approach channel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It removes excess water from reservoir and further direct it to downstream side.<\/li><li>Moreover, it helps in controlling discharge.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>3.Energy dissipators:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>These are provided at downstream end of the discharge channel.<\/li><li>It avoids damage to the dam as a result the high velocity of water may scour the downstream side.<\/li><li>Generally, Ski jump bucket, roller bucket are provided to dissipate the energy.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>4.Tail Channel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It conveys spillway discharge to the downstream side.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>5.Guide wall:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It guides the water to flow directly into the reservoir downstream.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>6.Discharge Channel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The main function is to convey the water safely from reservoir downward to the river.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Interested in learning about similar topics?
