And the small part is done by shutter sometimes if provided on the top of crest wall.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of Weir:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Weirs are classified as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Gravity Weir<\/li><li>Non-gravity weir<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>1.Gravity Weir:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>When the weight of weir balances uplift pressure caused by the head of water seeping below weir then it is called as gravity weir.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>2.Non gravity weir:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In this, weight of concrete slab with the weight of divide piers resists the uplift pressure largely.<\/li><li>Non gravity weirs has following types:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Vertical drop <\/li><li>Rock fill <\/li><li>Concrete <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>A.Vertical drop:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>This type consists of horizontal floor and a masonry crest with vertical or nearly vertical downstream face and One provides shutters at the crest.<\/li><li>Most of storage is done by raised crest and some storages by shutters provided over the crest.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>B.Rock fill:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>One calls it as dry stone slope weirs.\u00a0<\/li><li>It is suitable for fine sandy foundation stone which one uses mainly for construction of such type of weirs and hence requires large quantities of stone.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>C.Concrete:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>These are suitable for permeable foundations.&nbsp;<\/li><li>In such weirs sheet piles are provided on both upstream and downstream floors, in order to destroy the energy of water.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Component Parts:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The component parts are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Body of weir<\/li><li>Upstream Apron<\/li><li>Upstream curtain wall<\/li><li>Downstream apron<\/li><li>Downstream curtain wall<\/li><li>Crest<\/li><li>Shutter<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>1.Body of weir:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>One generally makes it of masonry.\u00a0<\/li><li>Its function is to raise water level on upstream side.\u00a0<\/li><li>It should be strong enough to resist water pressure.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>2.Upstream apron:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It protect it during floods from eroding action.\u00a0<\/li><li>Its length depends upon discharge of river and weir&#8217;s length.\u00a0<\/li><li>It also help to prevent leakage in subsoil and it minimizes uplift water pressure if any exist.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>3.Upstream curtain wall:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>One provides it to reduce the uplift pressure.\u00a0<\/li><li>Its length depends upon the nature of soil.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>4.Downstream apron:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Downstream apron serves like energy dissipators.&nbsp;<\/li><li>These are provided for destroying kinetic energy and thus prevent downstream side from erosion.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Its length depends upon the height of fall nature of soil discharge etc.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>5.Downstream curtain wall:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It protect downstream floor from uplift pressure.\u00a0<\/li><li>Its length depends upon the length of weirs.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>6.Crest:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It is the top of the weir.\u00a0<\/li><li>It must be strong and durable as it has to resist water pressure oftenly during floods.\u00a0<\/li><li>During flood, water flows over from the crest.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>7.Shutter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Shutters are provided at the top.\u00a0<\/li><li>It also helps in raising the water level on upstream of river.\u00a0<\/li><li>Shutters must be strong to resist water pressure.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Interested in learning about similar topics?
