The z-transform is primarily used to convert the discrete time domain signal into discrete frequency domain signal. The z-transform for LTI system is defined as<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"194\" height=\"50\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/ITCUeHTUH0Jm4y0iriZzwxpwcnTxU7GYrnXIpbTOg26mpnMocbh0n51Aly4Qsc7uKPT2AydGn4mp_zVIs_Hc1FPUvpfK38yu8wYc-uSDQwQkWNT5gbUH6pa8X3pgJDeLCuMtN4fd\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to its convolution property, the z-transform is a powerful tool to analyse LTI systems. From the convolution property Y(z)=H(z)X(z).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Y(z)= z-transform of system output<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>H(z) = z-transform of impulse response<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>X(z)= z-transform of system input<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A discrete time LTI system is causal if and only if the ROC of its system function is exterior of the circle including infinity. The ROC is the exterior of the outermost pole. H(z) is the ratio of polynomials in z, the order of the numerator cannot be greater than the order of the denominator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The LTI system is stable if and only if the ROC of the system function H(z) includes the unit circle |Z|=1. If it is a causal system it will be stable if and only if all the poles of H(z) lie inside the unit circle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Region of Convergence<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The range of variation of z for which z-transform converges is called the region of convergence of z-transform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Properties of ROC of z-Transform<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ROC does not contain any poles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If x(n) is a finite sequence and x(z) converges for some value of z, then ROC can be the entire z plane except at z=0 and \u221e.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As x(n) is a right sided sequence and x(z) converges for some value of z, then the ROC is the of the form |z|>R<sub>max<\/sub> where R<sub>max<\/sub> is the radius.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If x(n) is left sided sequence and x(z) converges for some value of z then the ROC is of the form |z|&lt;R<sub>min<\/sub> where R<sub>min<\/sub>\u00a0 is the smallest magnitude of any pole of x(z). Thus, the ROC is the entire circle having R<sub>min<\/sub>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If x(n) is a double sided sequence and x(z) converges for some value of z then the ROC is of the form.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>R<sub>1<\/sub> &lt;|z| &lt; R<sub>2<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>R<sub>min<\/sub> &lt; |z| &lt;R<sub>max<\/sub>. Where R<sub>1<\/sub>, R<sub>2<\/sub> are the magnitude of two poles of x(z)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Introduction to Z-Transform\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mJgVOV9jRZU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Properties of z-transform for Causal Signals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Linearity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If X<sub>1<\/sub>(z) = Z{x<sub>1<\/sub>(n)} and X<sub>2<\/sub>(z) = Z{x<sub>2<\/sub>(n)}<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Z{ax<sub>1<\/sub>(n) + bx<sub>2<\/sub>(n)} = a X<sub>1<\/sub>(z) + b X<sub>2<\/sub>(z)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Time Shifting&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If X(z) = Z{x(n)} and initial conditions for x(n) are zero then<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Z{x(n-m) } = z<sup>-m<\/sup> X(z)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where m is a positive integer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Multiplication by exponential sequence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If X(z ) = Z{x(n)} then<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Z [ a<sup>n<\/sup> x(n) ] = X(a<sup>-1<\/sup> z)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Convolution<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>We know that<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Z{x(n) * h(n) } = X(z) H(z)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Multiplication by n<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>If Z{x(n)} = X(z) then<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Z{n x(n)} = -z d\/dz X(z)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Interpretation of stability in z-domain<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most important characteristics of the z-plane is that the region of filter stability is mapped to the inside of the unit circle on the z-plane. Given the H(z) transfer function of a digital filter, we can examine that function&#8217;s pole locations to determine filter stability. If all poles are located inside the unit circle, the filter will be stable.
