{"id":3316,"date":"2021-07-08T16:22:23","date_gmt":"2021-07-08T10:52:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.goseeko.com\/blog\/?p=3316"},"modified":"2026-04-12T04:46:41","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T23:16:41","slug":"what-are-colloids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.goseeko.com\/blog\/what-are-colloids\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Colloids?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Colloids (also known as colloidal solutions or colloidal systems) are mixtures of insoluble particles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They show dispersion of one substance that are microscopic in nature, and show suspension in another substance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The size of these suspended particles in a colloid can vary from 1 to 1000 nanometres (10<sup>-9<\/sup> metres).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A colloid is a mixture of particles between 1 and 1000 nanometers in diameter, yet it is still capable of evenly spreading  throughout the solution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are also refer to as colloidal dispersions because the substances remain in dispersion and do not settle down on the bottom of the container.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;However, the condition remains that for a mixture to be termed as colloid<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> The suspended particles present in the mixture must not settle down,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The way that the particles of suspensions settle at the bottom of the container if left undisturbed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Solutions in colloidal state display tyndall effect, wherein the beam of light incident on colloids exhibit scattering due to the interactions between the colloidal particles and light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Types of Colloids and Their Properties\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QAH-cCK1bS8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">IUPAC Definition of Colloids<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The IUPAC definition of the colloidal state is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201c<em>The colloidal state is the state of subdivision in which molecules or polymolecular particles having at<\/em> <em> least one dimension in the range of 1 nanometre and 1 micrometre, <\/em>and show dispersion<em> in some medium<\/em> \u201c. Colloids usually feature substances that are evenly show dispersion in another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Such mixtures where the substance showing dispersion is called as the dispersion  phase and the substance through which dispersion is taking place is the continuous phase<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In simple terms, colloids are  a mixture where one of the substances are split into minute particles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, we define colloids as a mixture where one of the substances is split into very minute particles  and which can disperse throughout a second substance. The minute particles are colloidal particles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, we can also say that colloids are basically solutions in which solute particle size ranges from 1nm \u2013 1000 nm.
