Underground power stations are built under special circumstances Availability of underground hard rock of suitable depth and desired location. Terror of bombs and air attacks. Frequent earthquakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Types of Underground Power Stations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Different types of underground power stations depend on position of head race and tail race, control valves, turbine and generator used, control room topography and geology etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Free level tailrace tunnel without a downstream surge tank<\/li>
  2. Downstream station <\/li>
  3. Intermediate station arrangement<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Advantages:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. They allow greater operating heads. Thus improves power output and efficiency<\/li>
    2. They are safe against bomb attacks.<\/li>
    3. They are safe against rock and earth slips or snow avalanches.<\/li>
    4. The penstock and surge tanks may be cut into rock since the excavation is in the hard rock<\/li>
    5. The cost of construction of power house and its erection is less<\/li>
    6. It does not affect the scenic beauty of the site.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Disadvantages:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Cost of construction of the power station and accessories is high.<\/li>
      2. It requires increased lighting, special ventilation and air conditioning, thus it increases technical requirement and cost<\/li>
      3. The construction of an additional tail race channel and downstream surge tank works out to be costly.<\/li>
      4. Underground location of electrical equipment adds further to the cost.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
