Total internal reflection is the complete reflection of a ray of&nbsp; light within the medium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the ray of light&nbsp; moves from optical denser medium to rarer medium the refracted ray bends away from the normal. But as soon as the angle of incidence is greater than the critical angle, the refracted ray gets reflected back into the same medium. This&nbsp; phenomenon is known as <strong>&nbsp;\u201cTotal Internal Reflection\u201d.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"282\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.goseeko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image-14.png?resize=602%2C282&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1992\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Figure : Total Internal Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">For more clarity, look at the figure. Suppose Medium 1 (water) has refractive index n<sub>1<\/sub> and Medium 2 (air) has refractive index n<sub>2. <\/sub>When a light moves from medium 1 to medium 2, it Keep on increasing the angle of incidence till the angle of refraction becomes equal to 90<sup>0<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The angle of incidence for which angle of refraction becomes 90<sup>0<\/sup> is&nbsp; known as \u201c<strong>critical angle<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as soon as we further increase the angle of incidence (i.e. \u03b8<sub>1<\/sub>) of light beam in medium 1 greater than critical angle; instead of refracting, the beam of light gets reflected back in the same medium giving rise to the phenomena of total internal reflection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Point to keep in mind that when a beam of light moves from a rarer to denser medium, refracted ray bends towards the normal whereas when a beam of light moves from a denser to rarer&nbsp; medium, refracted ray bends away from the normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Critical Angle<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us calculate the value of critical angle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence at critical angle \u03b8<sub>1<\/sub>= \u03b8<sub>c<\/sub> and&nbsp; \u03b8<sub>2<\/sub>= 90<sup>o<\/sup> .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using Snell\u2018s law: n<sub>1<\/sub> sin \u03b8<sub>1<\/sub> = n<sub>2<\/sub> sin \u03b8<sub>2<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>n<sub>1<\/sub> sin \u03b8<sub>c<\/sub> = n<sub>2<\/sub> sin90<sup>o<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>sin \u03b8<sub>c<\/sub> = n<sub>2<\/sub> \/ n<sub>1<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u03b8<sub>c =<\/sub> sin<sup>-1<\/sup> (n<sub>2<\/sub> \/ n<sub>1<\/sub>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Observed value of critical angle depends on the materials present on each side of the boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Total Internal Reflection\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NAaHPRsveJk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Condition For Total Internal Reflection&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the important conditions require to obtain the phenomena of total internal reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The beam of light should travel from denser to rarer medium.<\/li><li>Angle of incidence of a beam of light should be greater than critical angle.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Interested in learning about similar topics?
