{"id":13233,"date":"2026-04-04T17:53:25","date_gmt":"2026-04-04T12:23:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.goseeko.com\/blog\/?p=13233"},"modified":"2026-04-05T15:40:05","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T10:10:05","slug":"seismic-waves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.goseeko.com\/blog\/seismic-waves\/","title":{"rendered":"Seismic Waves"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Seismic Waves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Seismic waves are the waves which are formed by sudden breaking of rock within the earth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Earthquake produces two types of seismic waves which are as follows:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/jrtdd.com\/\">https:\/\/jrtdd.com\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Body waves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Surface waves<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1.Body Waves:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Body waves are seismic waves that travel through the body of the earth.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Body waves are reflected and transmitted at interfaces where seismic velocity and\/or density change, and they obey Snell&#8217;s law.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The two different types of body waves are:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>P-Waves:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>P-Waves (P stands for primary or pressure or push pull).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These waves are also called longitudinal waves or compressional waves due to particle compression during their transport.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These waves involve compression and rarefaction of the material as the wave passes through it but not rotation.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>P-wave is transmitted by particle movement back and forth along the direction of propagation of the wave.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The most correct description of P-waves is, it is a dilational or irrotational waves.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>P-wave has the greatest speed and appears first on seismograms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>S-Waves:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>S-Waves (S stands for secondary or shear or shake).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also known as transverse waves, because particle motions are transverse to the direction of movement of the wavefront, or perpendicular to the ray.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These waves involve shearing and rotation of the material as the wave passes through it, but not volume change.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>S-waves have speeds less than P-waves, and appear on seismograms after P-waves  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prettyportal.de\/\">https:\/\/www.prettyportal.de\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Surface Waves:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Surface waves are seismic waves that are guided along the surface of the Earth and the layers near the surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These waves do not penetrate the deep interior of the earth, and shallow earthquakes(nuclear explosions do not generate these surface waves) normally do not generate these waves.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Surface waves are larger in amplitude and longer in duration than body waves.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These waves arrive at seismograph after the arrival of P- and S-waves because of their slower velocities.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The two different surface waves are:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rayleigh waves:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rayleigh waves or descriptively called &#8220;ground roll&#8221; in exploration seismology.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The particle motion of this wave is confined to a vertical plane containing the direction of propagation and retrogrades elliptically.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The particle displacements are greatest at the surface and decrease exponentially downward.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rayleigh waves show dispersion, and its velocity is not constant but varies with wavelength.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This wave is similar to how ocean waves propagate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Love waves:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These waves (named after A.E.H. Love, who discovered them) travel by a transverse motion of particles that is parallel to the ground surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This wave is somewhat similar to S-waves.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Love waves cannot exist in a uniform solid, and can only occur when there is a general increase of S-wave velocity with depth.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Their existence is another proof the Earth&#8217;s vertical in homogeneity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The particle motion is transverse and horizontal.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Generally, Love wave velocities are <a href=\"https:\/\/researchlakejournals.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/researchlakejournals.com\/<\/a>  greater than Rayleigh waves, so Love waves arrive before Rayleigh waves on seismograph.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seismic waves are the waves which are formed by sudden breaking of rock within the earth.
