Peyush Bansal of Lenskart is a BARBIE. So is Aadit Palicha of Zepto and Raghav Chandra of Urban Company. And before you wonder what they have in common with a doll that was once quite a popular toy for young girls, let’s tell you what BARBIE stands for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does BARBIE mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

BARBIE stands for ‘Bachelors Abroad and Returned to Build in the Indian Ecosystem’ This acronym describes Indian founders who pursued their undergraduate studies abroad and then came back home to create high-growth companies, including several unicorns.\u00a0The term was coined by venture investor Sajith Pai and has gained traction because these returnee founders combine global education and exposure with a deep understanding of opportunities in India. That’s a blend that can prove especially useful in today\u2019s market. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peyush Bansal co-founded Lenskart, Bansal studied abroad before returning to India to build one of the country\u2019s largest eyewear retail platforms. Lenskart combines online and offline sales of eyeglasses, sunglasses and contact lenses, and has scaled to serve millions across India. Zepto’s Aadit Palicha co-founded the quick commerce platform that competes with Blinkit and InstaMart, etc using a network of dark stores in many Indian cities. Another BARBIE profile includes Harsh Jain of Dream11, which turns everyday sports fans into active participants via fantasy sports gaming, making it one of India\u2019s most popular interactive sports platforms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many other BARBIE founders span sectors from fintech to health tech, applying insights from global universities to solve local problems, from digital payments to AI-driven services.  While the term may playfully echo a famous toy, BARBIE founders represent serious business impact.
